Thinking of going to visit a friend in Barbados and wondered if anyone has been before and has any recommendations?

I'll be booking flights myself and staying with them (free accommodation) so keen to understand id anyone has ever done something similar?

A lot of what I see of Barbados seems to focus around the resorts, would it be worth booking in for a few nights somewhere to get the full experience?
