Two Dogs Sleeping

    Hello,

Recently got a 4/6 month old rescue puppy which is in addition to our 7 year old dog. We kept them separate for the first few weeks just to make sure there wasn't any issues. Last few nights we have tried them sleeping together in same area of the house, however they are barking constantly.

Our 7 year old dog never would bark before this but they seem to be setting each other off. Am exercising them in evenings - both mentally and physically but doesn't seem to make a difference they are barking intermittently throughout the night.

Is there any advise for how to deal with this and get them to sleep through night without barking - don't want it to become a nuisance for neighbors and want them to sleep through the evening.

Is there a chance that there's a noise disturbing the puppy that your other dog has become accustomed to or isn't bothered by? Fireworks? wildlife? Or are they in a room where lights from cars etc could be disturbing the pup?

Was the pup sleeping with (in the same room as) you before and now isn't anymore?

    That would explain the barking...

No both were downstairs...kept our older guy at front part of house and had her out the back side of house...now they are both there together the barking has begun, it isn't continous barking but every so often throughout night last few nights...I am very light sleeper and have woken each time...

Are thete messing, for want of a better word?
You know, the pup starts playacting and thr older dig joins in.

Maybe for the time being, until the pup is more mature, they might need to sleep separately.

I hope you get it sorted, its great to have 2 dogs:)

Worth trying a radio in the room they are sleeping in - that is if it wouldn't keep you awake?! We tried this with a dog that was hearing early morning noise and it worked great!

If they were fine sleeping separate, then let them do that. When I took on an abused collie, my existing dog refused to "gel" with her. They were happier and thus quieter apart. They would not fight, just the existing dog wanted no intimacy.
