So, I'm flying into Rome next month & meeting my boyfriend there. We have a week. I have been before but he hasn't.
I loved it, but have done most tourist things, he is not so bothered for churches etc.
Where would you go for a few days away from Rome? We are flying in & out of there.
I was thinking down to Naples & the coast for a few days?
    Any suggestions welcome!

Florence and Pisa are good trips from Rome with great train service.

Amalfi is also great maybe taking in Pompei when in Naples and would try get to Positano or Sorrento if down that direction. I think you can get train all the way to Sorrento but Positano would be a bus or car from Naples.

Amalfi coast, beautiful place and not too far from Rome.

2.5 hour drive or on a bus. We went there through Naples.

Train to Naples. Great city even if it looks rather grotty. Then use the 'Circumvesuviana' train to access Herculaneum, Pompeii, Sorrento. You could also stay in Sorrento. An early morning hike to the top of Vesuvius is a great experience and not too difficult. There is about 1 hour stiff walking on the route.
Head down the coast (not far) to Amalfi and Ravello.
Note; If you hire a car be warned, driving is quite unlike Ireland and parking is a nightmare. Check bus services instead.

Bologna, 2 hours from Rome by high speed train.
Beautiful city, walkable city centre, great food and shopping.

+1 on this. Ferrara is nearby and well worth a visit.

I would look north towards the "Italian riviera". Starting at Pisa and work towards France. Public transport is very good and reasonably priced.

So decided to go north to Florence etc.
Naples & sorrento & the almalfi coast are for another holiday!

So, anyone have any recommendations for places just outside the city of Rome for a week. With good transport links? Or. Close to city etc
