Buying a second hand hatchback

    Hi all,

Currently looking at getting a second-hand car in the next few weeks and I am kind of torn at the moment on what I should get and if it should be diesel or a petrol. My budget is around €12k and I am probably going to go to the north to buy.

So, the reason why I am torn between a petrol and diesel is that my driving distance in a week is irregular. On the weekends that I am home from Dublin, I would be doing mostly motorway driving and doing around 350km. However, when I am not going home, I would be doing mostly short journeys in to and from the shops etc and would be doing well to clock over 30km on those weeks as it is basically city driving. In a typical month, I would be going home about 2 and an odd 3 times a month.

I was swaying towards Diesel for a long time but lately, I am starting to think that a petrol would be better suited to my driving patterns and just wanted a second opinion. I am also somewhat concerned that Diesel will be hit in the next few budgets with either higher road tax or higher taxes on the pump to bring parity with petrol and that they would be hit hard in terms of going to sell one in a few years.

As in terms of what kind of car that I would be looking for. I am currently leaning to towards getting a hatchback and the two cars that I am mostly looking are Seat Leon and I30 but I am would consider other options as well.

So basically I am looking for a few opinions on whether to go for a petrol or diesel and suggestions on cars to look at.

You should be grand with a diesel if that’s what you want.

Ford focus is the nicest to drive in that class.

Nothing wrong with your options however, seat should be cheaper

Thanks, haven't really considered a focus but will take a look into them as well.
