    Good evening!

I was wondering recently... Is there a crossover time when our swallows, swifts and martins leave and our Brent Geese and other birds arrive from the North...

I have noticed a few swallows last weekend and haven't seen any since...
Also there is no sign of the Brent Geese on the Bull Island mudflats yet..

Is it just timing of light, winds and weather ?

Are all species ever in Ireland at the same time?

    Thanks for reading !

They certainly cross over. Swallows are here in numbers until at least the end of September and Brent seat arriving mid September. Swifts are already gone however. Different species migrate at different times.

    Thank you for the replies...
I see some Brent Geese have arrived already...

I think bird migration is fascinating....
When a really cold, winter spell hits .. you can see flocks of redwings, blackbirds arriving here & fighting with native birds...

Do swifts leave first, followed by swallows & finally Martins?

Swifts arrive last and leave first. To me, Summer hasn't really started until I see/hear my first Swift and the Winter blues set in when they disappear at the end of August. Martins and Swallows usually leave at the same time - still a few Sand Martins about the River Slaney last week.

There was a small flock of Brent Geese at Merrion Gates on the south side yesterday. These are always the first Dublin arrivals.

The curlew I first heard and saw over the field and ocean behind the dwelling is now a regular sight and call... such an evocative cry.
