Focus sidelight

The mk1 focus failed the nct on a front ns sidelight. Handy one I thought. Picked up 2 bulbs to have a spare. Put one in and it didnt light up just went milky. All other bulbs on the car work fine.

No 12v at the bulb or the headlight connector with the sidelights only on.

Fuse 57 is the ns sidelight. 58 is the os.

There is 12v across the fuse terminals but not across the fuse when its plugged in as per F58. Fuse is fine. Tested it and have the same problem when i tried a spare. Stopped for a cup of tea here. What am i missing?

what do you mean "nit across fuse when plugged in?" - ie your getting 12v on the fuse without the bulb in, but if plug the bulb in it drops? then you have voltage drop due to high resistance in somewhere.

Start with checking the connection at the bulb holder is clean, the wire is good connection to terminal and the terminals have good fit.

    Does the link work?

I mean with the fuse out there is 12v across the F57 terminals but 0v across the back of the fuse when you plug that into the slot. Its a good fit. Not loose or anything.

yes link works, your on a different fuse in pick 1 vs pick 2? Volt meter not great tool when you are looking for excess resistance, the amount of current the wire take is not really tested as it only takes tiny amount to show 12v on the multi meter.

if you can use test light at the relevant fuse and control it (on and off) with the light switch then 100% to have a poor connection from there to the light fitting, could be power or ground - test for both with test light at the light fitting

Since there is 12 v at the fuse and both sides of the the bulb socket go to ground im thinking I have a break in the wire from the fusebox to the headlight connector. Pain in the arse. I'm going to pull out the fuseboz behind the glove box for a look next.

I think the bulb turning milky is due to there being a hole or crack in the bulb allowing air in? Hence when you turn it on the filament burns up and the white milky effect is the smoke inside the bulb.

Did you try another bulb? Also check the bulb holder for corrosion and moisture.

That would make sense as i dropped the bulb :o I was half asleep after a balls of a week in work. Ye tried a different bulb but no luck. Holder and all the wiring at the headlight look fine unfortunately.
