Question regarding petrol/diesel mileage

    Hi,

Currently looking at second hand cars from around 2012.

As a rule of thumb can someone recommend what sort of ranges would be ideal in terms of mileage for both petrol and diesel for cars of that age?

For petrols is it a case simply of the lower the better?
For diesels is there a minimum yearly mileage that should be adhered to, to keep things ticking over nicely?

I realise that there is going to be a lot variance between different types of cars. I'm just looking for some rough guidelines.

Also if you're buying second hand but not doing a large amount of mileage (<10k miles per annum) is it a case that you shouldn't even be considering diesels? If so is there any particular reasons for that?

It’s not the total mileage but the average journey distance

So you could do 5k km per year but majority of Journey are 100km+ and on motorway, so in that case diesel might be best

You could also do 20k kms per year but they are all 20-50km trips, with stop/start so then petrol/hybrid could be best

That’s the way I would look at it

Thanks very much. Why is that though?

There’s a few reasons, firstly a Diesel engine will take a bit longer to get up to optimum temperature, so if you only do really short journies the engine will be running cold most of the time. The other factor is that for the particle filter to work, the exhaust system needs to get hot for an extended period. You might find the car tries to do a regeneration of the filter and then gets interrupted by you ending your journey.
If you take the example of only doing 5k a year, but exclusively for journies from Dublin to Cork, there wouldn’t be any such issues.
