Looking at booking a hotel around Cork city for the wife's 40th next month. Would like somewere nice, with a spa for herself and a nice pool for me!Nice rooms and a good restaurant. Hayfield Manor is probably outside my budget unfortunately. Had a quick look on Google and Maryborough House Hotel and Montenotte Hotel both look nice. Just looking for some local advice on either of those 2 or any other recommendations. Thanks

You definitely wouldn't go as far as Cork County, no? Castlemartyr would be nice - Is secluded too

The Kingsley is a lovely spot. Outdoor pool!

It's lovely.... But she brought me there for my 40th!! Yeh, I'd consider Cork county as we'll be dropping the kids with mother in law in Clonmel.

The Marlborough is pretty lovely since the renovation and you’re only a short stroll into the city too.

Fota resort is fab. I haven't stayed there but i've been to the spa and pool a few times and it is amazing.

Sorry - totally asleep this morning. I meant the Montenotte. Apologies for the total brain fart.

Would Montenotte be nicer than the Maryborough? I'd intend to just chill for 2 days so closeness to city centre is not important. Just looking for a nice, relaxing break away... Free from kids!!

I’ve nrver been hugely impressed by the Maryborough. Food has never been great, plus I think the rooms are worn around the edges.

The Kingsley has great rooms, super comfy, but the hotel general areas are a bit sparse or bleak.

The imperial is the best located hotel and has a spa so might be worth a look .

Ok, I'll check out Imperial and Montenotte a bit more.

Imperial is central, but do you need that. It’ll be busy, noisy (depending on room) because of it and the rooms can be tired if you don’t one that is renovated.

    Are they still housing travelers?

Head up to the lyart in Kilkenny. It's a nice hotel, close to clonmel with plenty to do in the city.

Yes, don't really need a central hotel. Just heard Cork city & surrounding area has nice hotels. Busy and noisy not ideal but I'm looking at midweek of Halloween so hotels will be busier with families etc.

They were there. Made women feel very uneasy at the pool.

The Kingsley had travellers for a few days as a storm damaged their caravans.
They did what they usually do and got kicked out fast. This was about 8/9 months ago.

The montenotte is the best of the bunch, that's where I'd stay. Check out their dinner and movie nights, their meant to be good.

I looked it up, it's outside my budget unfortunately. Looks like it's between the Montenotte or the Maryborough... Maryborough just replied to my email enquiry with a good deal for 2bb,1 dinner and two 50 minute spa treatments in an executive room overlooking the gardens. I'll wait and see what Montenotte come back with.

Monart near enniscorthy is fabulous, 5 star, very reasonable compared to other 5 stars in Ireland and....

They have a NO CHILD policy. Check it out. We’ve been there twice and it’s really chilled out.

I’d recommend Fota if you are not too pushed about being in the city

Yeh, it looks lovely and reviews are very good. Hotel looks nice but a poster here said rooms are a little bit dated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,280 ✭✭✭toby2111

So the Montenotte got back, poor offer in comparison to Maryborough. Maryborough offered 2bb, 1 dinner in an executive room for €20 less than Montenotte offer of 2bb in a standard room.....

Food is poor there from a recent bar food experience.

Tripadvisor reviews for the restaurant are good. I'm sure there's nice restaurants in Douglas also. I'll keep looking around but they've offered the best deal so far.

I was in Montenotte in the past year and in general thought it was lovely. Only 2 downsides were 1. The gorgeous bedroom had only a shower, no bath 2. We ate one night in the bar and while the food was fine, the atmosphere wasn't great, lights too bright, very bustly, not cosy at all.
I have been to the Maryborough several times and have always enjoyed it. The spa is fantastic and the staff always very friendly and helpful but I agree with the poster saying the rooms could do with some attention. And... I should add the last time I was there was at least 5 years ago.
If you do end up near Cork City I highly recommend a lunch or dinner at Cafe Paradiso, one of my favourites!

I go to Fota every so often with the wife. We love it there - feels like you're in the middle of the countryside despite being only 10 minutes out of town. The chicken wings in the golf clubhouse are top notch too.

Yes, it's lovely, stayed there a few years ago.
I managed to haggle the Montenotte Hotel a bit. Their package is now €30 dearer than the Maryborough, which is not much .... So will I go with them or is Maryborough a better option for a nice, quiet, relaxing break with decent food & nice rooms?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 576 ✭✭✭Mardyke

The Maryborough never impresses me, personally. It feels small and although the bar area is quite nice, it's not particularly lavish or interesting for a hotel that rates itself highly.

It's a bit rough around the edges too, there always seems to be a feel of the aftermath of a wedding or prep for a conference going on.

And for a place in Cork it's kind of cut off from walking to anywhere nearby.

    If go for the Montenottee.

Inchydoney is a gorgeous spa hotel! That’s where I’d be heading, we often take a spin down for lunch and it’s fab. Location is obviously amazing and clonakilty has loads of good pubs and a few nice spots for dinner as well if ye wanted to venture out one night. I’ve heard good things about the spa but I havnt been and they have a pool

Fota is probably better if you want to feel like you are escaping and getting away from it all.

Don't know your dates, but pigsback.com have a 2bb 1 dinner at the Montenotte with a few extra's thrown in - box of chocs in bedroom, glass of prosecco etc.

€ 325 all in (€ 30 extra if staying on a Sat night)

Sorry, I'm lousy at links but if you google Montenotte Hotel deals, it'll come up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,669 ✭✭✭who_me

I quite like the River Lee (for events/meals, living in Cork I don't stay in Cork hotels much! :) ). Nice location, very central, the river terrace is nice. I don't know if it has any spa facilities.

The Montenotte is very good too. Meal, small cinema too. Great balcony and gardens overlooking the city. If you're looking in that area there's also the Ambassador, though both of these two are up on a hill so get your walking shoes on (or taxis)!
