Diesel or petrol....

My commute is 40k each way, first 25-30km is rural/N81/rural, then into urban/M50 for the last 10km or so.
Used at weekends also, could be 10km e/w to do the shopping or 30km e/w to the folks or into town.
Is diesel worthwhile with that kind of usage?
Costing about 8-10euro a day roughly commuting now in a 1.6 04 petrol A3. To me that seems a lot.
    Thoughts?

May I be the first to say it, if that's a very regular commute and you have the facility to charge a car, I'd be suggesting that you consider an electric car.

Looks like the perfect usage for one to be honest.

If I owned my house I'd get a charge point installed, but alas Im renting, and none at my office that Im aware of.

    That's fair enough so.

Considering you have a mix or rural and urban I'd be leaning towards a hybrid, you should see good fuel economy but apart from that the auto (cvt) gearbox will make for a far more relaxing commute if you do it in traffic.

    Good advice.
To be honest I actually like changing gear myself, be it in the car or on the motorbike.
Budget is not high, i was thinking 5-6k so is there anything I'd get in that range or do I need to spend a bit more?
Given the profile, is diesel a waste of my time?

I wouldn't think so but I'd consider some petrols also. Overall and given the budget you identified I'd be looking for the best condition car available within my price range. Good diesels are out there that would give plenty of good service, Superb 1.9tdi's for example or Avensis 2.0d but if you found a good hybrid Prius or petrol car I wouldn't ignore them.

I'm only suggesting the auto as it's on my mind after driving from Deansgrange and out the M7 yesterday. I would have gladly had one.

I'm just selecting this as an example of what you could get

I can afford a bit more but as Im house hunting now Im trying not to spend a fortune on a car, main thing was to get opinion on whether diesel would be worth considering with that profile of driving, or should I forget about it.
With mortgage payments in mind, I'd like to get our monthly outgoings down a bit on current, and petrol is a big one right now. Only other consideration is something my dogs can go in the back of, so focusing on estates. Was thinking of 4wd (non permanent) due to rural location but kinda think that would be a waste of money due to inefficiency. Except maybe something like an octavia scout.

If your buying new, go petrol.

If second hand, go diesel as I think you are doing the miles to justify it. Diesel second hands good value due to the presumed anti diesel policies coming down the tracks.
