    Hi Folks,

Just wondering how long penalty points letter take to come. I was caught without seat belt in a queuecoming out of a car park(yes stupid) and gaurd knocked on my window.

I got the letter and paid the fine around Three months ago but no letter came saying I actually got penalty points.

Is this normal. I was discussing with people and said that they usually send a seperate letter with the date the penalty points start after the fine was paid

Is there a way I can check online or by phone etc. Did the penalty points go through. Obviously want to inform my insurance company.

There is a phone number you can ring and give your license number and it will tell you what penalty points if any are present.

Maybe letter got lost in post?

If you paid the fine & submitted your license details on the initial notification you got then you can be sure you have 3 penalty points for no seatbelt. You do not get a separate letter to say you got three penalty points that was already stated on the fine notification. I sent an email here info@ndls.ie to see what points I had

"If you have committed a driving offence that incurs penalty points you will receive a written notification informing you that points are being added to your driving licence record. This notice will include details of your name, address, date time and location of the driving offence concerned. It will also confirm that you either paid the fixed charge for the offence or were convicted in the court of such offence. The notice will also contain a date on which the notice was issued to you. This is the important date as the points will only be added to your licence record 28 days after this date."

.....from the RSA's website. It does appear that you should receive a letter after payment of the fine OP.
TBH I can't remember myself as my current 3 points were received nearly 3 years ago :).

What a joke. Getting smacked with 3 points for such a victimless “crime”. You’d think the Gard might have used a bit of dicretion and given you a warning

Peter4918 is incorrect, you are infact supposed to get a letter to notify you of points and dates of application and expiry.

Anyway, if you want to find out for 100% certainty, ring up RSA and ask.

Takes literally a few minutes as they are usually quick to answer 1890 416141

(Have your licence nr at hand)

You could say it's a joke to drive without a seat belt and risk getting 3 points for something so minimal. Hard to forget to out the seatbelt on to be fair.

In saying that, compared to other 3 point penalties it is fairly harsh.
