12 years old car, VIN typo on reg cert...

    Long story short - brought the 159 for NCT last night, all good but the VIN number on the registration certificate has a different starting part than the one on the chassis (the plate starts with ZAR939 like on all Alfa 159s, internal Alfa Romeo designation for the car, while the cert has mysteriously ZAR140).

    This is the result of the NCT rules change on Aug 12th, as before they only checked the last 7 digits of the VIN - so even if I had the car for nearly 7 years now, it's the first time it gets flagged.

    It's only and advisory, but the NCT centre recommended getting the reg cert corrected - gave me a statement where they declare to believe the chassis number plate to be genuine and the certificate to have a typo / error. I am supposed to send it to the Central Vehicle Office in Rosslare along with the registration certificate.

    But that's where the information ends - I was unable to find anything mentioned on the Revenue site, nor anywhere else on the net, I guess as a result of the rule change being only a month old. The office in Rosslare doesn't pick up the phone, there's an automated answering machine that gives out obvious, pointless information (use www.revenue.ie et all).

    Any experience with this? I am obviously a bit nervous about just sending off the certificate with no way of contacting anybody in case anything went wrong...

    Don't recall a form to change the VIN, only the change of particulars form but you wouldn't be able to change the VIN on that.

    Best give them a call, if you have the statement from the NCT it should be straight forward.

    For reference to anybody who'd be looking for this in the future - got this sorted out.

    In short:

    1. Write a short note summing what happened and what you need to be done (e.g. 12 years old car, went to NCT, VIN discrepancy, NCT guy thinks it's a genuine mistake and needs to be corrected on the logbook);
    2. Attach both the NCT "Incorrect VIN" form they gave you and your logbook to the letter;
    3. Send the lot to the Central Vehicle Office at the Office of Revenue Commissioners in Rosslare, full address is on the "Incorrect VIN" form;
    4. Wait for the corrected logbook to show up in the post;

    As odd and slightly discomforting as it can be to just send your logbook away, I managed to speak with the office in Rosslare and they confirmed it's the way to proceed. I've made a couple of copies of it, doubtful they'd be of any use - more for the "mind comfort" while the issue is resolved.
