When you read that a watch is 40mm, or 42mm, where exactly is that measurement taken?

External. normally you will find that a 42mm watch will have a visible face of around 36 mm

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

Across the widest part horizontally, minus the crown. Vertical from lug to lug measurements are sometimes included. Watch design, particularly lug design can have a big effect on what size a watch wears.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

This seems to be the most important measurement for me, the strap should curve slightly around the wrist, not go at a 90 degree angle from the spring bar

This is why we want to break into the Steinhart factory and force a bend on the lugs.
