They're getting really hammered on the cost of rural deliveries, attributing the increase in the price of a stamp to €1 pretty much to that fact. Any efforts to reduce costs (deliveries 3 days a week (Mon, Wed, Fri) or installation of post boxes at the end of driveways) have been resisted, so it's not surprising they're looking elsewhere to save costs. I believe that's their true motivation, not CO2 reduction.

Ironically, where I live (fairly dense urban) all letter deliveries are done by bicycle. No EV will beat that. Keeps the postman fairly fit too!

You’ll find that a van goes around and drops off the round bags at green boxes along the route. ( look like post boxes but with no hole for letters )

Also parcels are delivered by vans

There are at least 40 vans that do under 60 km a day in Galway city alone ,fuel and servicing savings as well as parts to go wrong greatly reduced means insane savings really..was never about the green bit .. there are a couple of fish delivery vans in Galway that are Nissan ev vans too..

The only issue I can see is the part of charging all the vans, and making sure they get charged overnight, probably asign a night worker to have that job ,(one already employed) ..go around spot checking.

Do electric commercial vehicles get a reduced rate of motor tax ?

In our case the postman picks up the area's post in his personal car and parks it at the top of the road. He bikes it from there.

Yep, I know parcels are delivered separately by van, which is why I said letters.

Yes they do if they weigh less than 1500kg, it's just EUR92 to tax for the year. Above 1500kg it's the same as diesel / petrol afaik

Deutsche Post / DHL have developed a POST specific electric delivery van, a huge success by all accounts (they do e-delivery bikes as well)

French Post (La Poste) had 10,000 EV vans way back in 2011/2012

Not always are the Germans at the front of where it's at :p
