Anyone V60 at home?

I was in a small shop in Kilkenny and they had a Hario v60 02 for less than a tenner, so I picked it up and some Badger & Dodo Ethiopian roasted on the 6th Sept. Filters too.

Proper spur of the moment purchase, I had V60 once in a shop and not since.

I'm looking forward to trying it, I have some 3FE beans here too that I'll stick into it too at some stage.

My V60 is my number one used coffee gadget. It's simple, quick and tastes great. And obviously being cheap is a nice plus too! You really can't go wrong with it, plenty of youtube videos if you're looking for a method, but even then there's no need to follow them too rigidly.

Use a Kalita Wave mostly at home now. Similar. Easier, less fuss and better tasting than out of the Gaggia C.

What size grind is typically used for the V60? I have one, and filters but rarely use it. Is the slow pouring long neck kettle needed?

The long neck kettle is not needed, it's more to facilitate a slow steady stream so you can make sure the grounds are saturated evenly, if you pour all the water in at once what may happen is you will end up with certain clumps dried up and other clumps oversaturated. A good alternative is pouring from a pitcher, just make sure you don't wait too long or the water will cool.

Think somewhere in the coarseness feel of table salt. Ideally, you want a ballpark figure of 250ml through 13-15g in 2:30m. That's just one recipe though. If it's taking a lot longer or shorter than than that, the grind is probably off. This is an example for the 01 size cone.

It also helps to press a light hole in the middle of the grounds with your thumb, it helps the blooming of the grounds start earlier.

Whether the grounds themselves should be lightly tamped is a whole other story...

Don't find a long neck necessary either.....just pour with care from a kettle.
