A tad obsessed at the moment with idea of living in a log cabin. We can't afford mortgage and rent is a joke but I know it's really hard to get land to build one. Anyone made this venture and, if so, how easy/hard was it to get land and planning permission? Also I heard they're not meant for irish weather bit keep hearing conflicting things about that. Is this a realistic dream to have?!

You can't. Or at least if you could, it wouldn't really be a cheap log cabin but a regular (expensive) timber framed house.

My friend has one out his back garden and has rented it out for the last 10 years or so. Any tenant that has lived there has loved the. Very warm and comfortable.

Down side it that he doesn't have planning permission for it as a dwelling & I don't believe anyone else has gotten planning permission for one for domestic use. They are against the building regulations for dwelling.

It's a pity they cannot come up with a solution for these to fireproof them to meet regs. His is bigger than one bedroom apartment yet cost 20k from start to finish 10 years ago. It certainly could be a way of housing people comfortably on the cheap.
