This is going to a whole new level of stupidity.

A coast guard scratching/rubbing his ear is construed to be something sinister.

    Honestly...

He gave a furtive glance at the camera before he made the hand sign so I don't think it was simply him scratching his ear, looks like it was probably exactly what they thought it was.

    Does seem intentional alright

Certainly how I saw it, in which case he got exactly what he deserved. I'd imagine that the people that work with him would be in a better position to judge whether or not this was an 'accident' they are likely well familiar with his political leanings.

What's this sign he was making?

To me all it looks like it's the "don't look at the hole" game where you make a circle of your finger and thumb and put it on your leg.

I had never heard or seen the sign before, no idea about it but if that's supposed to be a white power sign he's definitely doing it. You'd want to be fairly obtuse to argue that fella was just scratching his ear.

We used to do that to eachother in school. Make that sign with your hand below your waist and if someone looked at it you got to punch them in the arm.

which of course you do this sign below your waist as part of that game, so it isn't that

Sure but there's a bit of difference between dopey gang signs and a sign that's apparently racist in a country with massive ongoing race issues....

Isn't the US coast guard considered a military branch as well? So you're even more likely to get a book thrown at you for doing something stupid on tv.

you don't think the "racist" hand sign is also dopey? this stuff is not worth the airtime. 24hr internet news cycle has made us all stupider

Of course it's dopey but I'm not black or american so it means nothing to me as I'm sure it means nothing to you.

This is apparently a sign with racist meanings in the US and was done live on tv by a member of the US coast guard. In that context he got called out on it and got fired.

If someone trawled his private social media pictures and tried to have him fired I'd say the world has gone mad etc etc but this isn't the case here. If you can't see the context of his firing then there's no point talking any more about it really.

I understand the context but I think its utterly manufactured and the entire concept behind it is beneath contempt. I would also repectfully suggest that in terms of what should be worrying black americans, those throwing out gang signs constitute a far greater threat to life and limb than some moron doing a recently invented supposed white power hand gesture.

    Here it is

    2LgLi.jpg
A US Coast Guard member assigned to respond to Hurricane Florence has been removed after making a gesture on television which some viewers alleged was a white power symbol.

We are aware of the offensive video on Twitter – the Coast Guard has identified the member and removed him from the response,” the US Coast Guard said on its official Twitter account. “His actions do not reflect those of the United States Coast Guard.”
The gesture sparked an online backlash, with some Twitter users interpreting it as a racist message. “Did you all see this guy flash White Power on TV?” Jan Gobble wrote (WHO?), calling for an investigation.

Coast Guard Lieutenant J B Zorn said the incident was being investigated: “Whatever that symbol means, it doesn’t reflect the Coast Guard and our core values. It won’t be tolerated.”

    Wiki sez https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OK_(gesture)

    We're through the rabbit hole.

While the OK symbol thing is possibly the most stupid thing I've heard the guy in the video looks like he is clearly aware of the camera and makes the gesture knowing it would get a reaction.

Someone suggested he was plucking out some hair in his ear.
Not sure I’d agree. His fingers go up first, then his thumb and index finger create a circle- it’s an awkward sort of movement to do- sticking up the rest of your fingers at the side of your head is not required to pluck ear hair.
I think the only definitive way of “proof” is a wider check on any dealings with radical groups- if he does have, then it’s more likely than not.

I’m now going to leave the internet for the rest of the day as I’ve just realized I’ve described how to pluck your ear hair and I need some time to reflect on why my life has ended up this way :P

He is just trolling, 4chan came up with this one pretending it was a symbol for white power as they wanted to see if the looney left news channels would fall for it(just like when they did the milk is racist campaign), guess what happened.

Whatever the gesture means, it looks completely deliberate. That look at the camera followed by the whateveritis can't be mistaken for an itchy ear.

Do you know what seems to be a common characteristic among these alt-right/alt-lite/white nationalist/white supremacist types?

    Cowardice.

Complete and utter cowardice - they make their little hand gestures and then pretend they were just scratching their ear, or they dress up in nazi symbols and then say 'it's just cosplay', or 'I'm a historical recreationist!', 'I'm not a white supremacist, I'm a race realist!'.

Gay people openly marched in the streets in places where it was literally illegal to be gay.
Black people marched in the streets in places where they could very easily be murdered by lynching with the local police as witnesses.

These pathetic creatures haven't even the courage to vent their shabby little opinions without some way of pretending it was all a joke, or ironic, just in case someone might splash them with coffee, or maybe even call them bigots and assholes to their faces.

    QU0wbcA.jpg
That's a Gay pride parade in Uganda.
    That's courage.
That's standing up for justice, even when you know that doing so will probably get you beaten, maybe murdered.

People started to adopt it as a white power symbol. Proud boys always use it, so do other groups.
Anyway, if your defence is "it's just a prank white power symbol designed to annoy the left" and you're doing it on TV, in work, working for the government about a disaster that's about to hit, probably not the best time to do it.

Lol the Coast Guard were very quick to throw their member under the bus.

No due process afforded to him. I say he'll take a nice skelp off them.

4chan proved just how strange these media outlets are. It's almost as they want this sort of thing to be happening, race baiting sells.
