    Hi.

Is there anything to be wary about with regard to a Japanese Leaf?

The car below might suit my short commute - less than 10 mile each way.

Would it manage 20 miles in winter?

    Thanks

Unless it's a Japanese import, all 2010-2013 Leafs in Ireland were made in Japan, before production started in Sunderland. If that's the case, there should be no insurance or other Japanese import issues.

The Japan built leaf’s have an electronic handbrake and are known to fail. Expensive to fix apparently.

I’d be turning that on/off a few times to make sure it’s working. I presume a broken handbrake would be an NCT fail.

Other than that it sounds like it would suit you fine.

Just as a by the way....

Any idea what sort of money it would cost to replace the battery ?

Last time I looked, a refurbed battery pack was about €4K, ish. That was about 6 months ago, and I can’t find the link. I’d imagine they’ve gone down in price a bit now, though. And you might get lucky and pick one up at a breakers’ yard. Even then, I’d say you’re looking at €2-3k

It's not a Japanese Leaf , as in Jap import , it's a uk import..

Its far more cost effective to have the battery removed and the dead cells replaced. A garage in Baldonnel called MKW motors can do it There are a few others begining to get into it too, but I expect (hope) it will be regulated soon.

    Dodgy as hell.
Tells you in the Ad that the Battery is is fecked.
Makes a point of mentioning that that it comes with plastic "leather" Seat Covers, only one reason for that !
Supposedly had a Clay-Bar clean, but pictures 2 & 4 show more marks than an abused Wheely-bin.
Asking price is far too low

Op, this is not the Car for you....or anybody else.

Price is right for the battery and range in my opinion.
Plastic leather covers as the basic seats are horrible fabric.
Worth noting that claying a car does not remove swirls, scrapes or marks. It only decontaminates the paint to prepare it for the addition of a wax/polish/sealant. (It also should be de-tarred, de-ironed before that to really work)

Black is a fcuk of a car if you have any type of switl marks on it, they will show.

*just to balance the equation. I’m in no way connected to the car.

    Rubbish.

    If you...
Have a few kids jumping in and out for training
    Do a school run
Run to the shops, or any other public place, where idiots don't care what their door hits
Work less than 20km from your house

    Then this car is perfect.

Your assuming the battery wont degrade further, it will.

Can't remember where I read it but there is something about the batteries hitting a plateau in degradation at around 70% where the degradation dramatically reduces, something to do with the chemistry obviously - can anyone confirm this?

That's cool to know. MKW motors has been a Bosch accredited partner and training centre for a long time and they are a very accomplished modern garage. They are superb at diagnostics (where others have failed). Anyone interested, do a search on the main motors forum and you'll get the idea.

Next time I'll have a chat with Keith I'll ask him about doing EV battery refurbishments / cell replacements

I was there yesterday and indeed they do battery refurbishments / repairs and they are specialising in everything EV at the moment. Smart move ahead of most independent garages.

    Highly recommend MKW motors.

So what's the story? Just rock up with the car, leave it with them, and come back to a ~100% car again?
