Hi, My wife was receiving Carers Benefit up to last April. I contacted Revenue to get the tax credits I was receiving for it taken off but was told I have to wait until year end and fill out a P21. Is this correct? To be honest I haven't a clue about tax and how it works. Thanks

What tax credit were you receiving for it? Are you talking about carer's benefit paid by the DSP?

Yes that's it. When she started receiving the benefit we didn't know we had to inform the revenue. I was caught with a tax bill for that year but since she's finished with it now I was trying to get the credits I received for it sorted

You don't get any tax credits for carer's benefit. Revenue probably adjusted your tax credits in order to collect the tax on the DSP payments. If they've done this in 2018 then you won't be able to get them back until 2019. In Jan 2019, request a P21 balancing statement for 2018 and if you've overpaid tax you will get it back. Be careful though as you might also get a bill if you've underpaid.
