I already paid the motor tax this morning, but it takes four working days to delivery the disc, can I drive out today with my tax paid invoice?

    Thanks in advance~

It would be some arsehole of a Garda who wouldn't accept a receipt and a commitment to go back to the Garda station in a few days with the disc.

Technically no, but no guard would prosecute as it's a guaranteed loss in court (unless the person is mad enough to pay the FPN).

Guards have always accepted receipt on my phone any time I've been stopped with no disc.

How often do you get stopped with no disc?

If it's less than a month out they probably wouldn't even question it.

Strictly speaking, no. The offence is not "not taxed", the offence is "not displaying a valid tax disc" (or similar, I forget the wording)
Also, if you park in a public place you may get a ticket for non-display of tax disc.

If you get stopped you probably will get 10 days to show the disc at a Garda station.

Try not to drive on the public at any stage if you can.

+1 OP this is really all you need to worry about. Avoid parking on a public road. A shopping centre car park is ok, not public streets.

Can we please not get into whether a shopping centre car park is a 'public place' or not for traffic regulations? The fact is that traffic wardens regard them as no-go areas because they can be asked to leave by the management, given that it's private property.

99% of Gardai on a checkpoint will accept the receipt - why bother writing all the details in his/her notebook when the OP has clearly paid the renewal?

Over the years, quite a few times. I was taxing the car every 3 months at the very last day for quite a long time as I was fairly broke!

on the renewal form for April this form may be used privided that....... 1.(iv) application is made prior to or During May..

the Tax office is permitting a month's grace.

You're ok. Council wardens have no jurisdiction in publicly accessible privately owned car parks ( shopping centers, pubs, hotels, etc etc ) as the parking is not controlled by council bye laws.

They're not providing any grace. They're just saying you can use that form prior to the end of the following month as there's no arrears to be accounted for which requires a different form.

It would be a good defence to state that one arm of the law is allowing something which another arm might take seriously

Thank you all, seems the conclusion is I shouldn't driving before the tax disc be delivered.

You'll be grand driving, if you have the receipt then bring it with you if not and your stopped just explain to the Guard that your car is taxed and you are waiting on the disc. A lot of them have the mobile app now that tells them if the car is taxed or not anyways.

However the advice given is that you should avoid parking in public places as traffic wardens can give you a ticket for failing to display a valid tax disc.

I've often parked up for the day on a public road patrolled by wardens with just the receipt printout. Never a problem

I have no doubt that a traffic warden would give you a ticket for non-display .
You'll probably be ok with the Gardai.

A number of times I have encountered Garda tax checkpoints and been waved through with my car tax having expired at the end of the previous month. I did once get a ticket at a park n' ride for an out-of-date tax disc though, so I'd agree with those posters who say that you should worry more about where you park than about Garda checkpoints.

I also keep a copy of my receipt in the car while the tax disk is in the post.
