Motor tax - paid for 1 month before delivery

    Hi
I bought a Nissan Juke on the 03 Sept 2018 from a SIMI dealership in Sandyford. The road tax ran out on the 31 Jul 2018. The purchase agreement was signed on the 03 Sep 2018 and I took delivery on that day, i.e. date I took ownership of the car. I got the Log book in the post and went online to tax it. The car was in arrears for all of August and I had not choice but to pay it in order to tax it online.
I could understand paying the road tax from the 01 Sep 2018, but I dont see how i should have been liable for the month of August when I didnt own the car at that point. Incidentally the the log book came out with the change of ownership been the 31 Aug 2018., which was not the case in fact. I mailed the dealership and they have ignored me.
Looks like the dealership pulled a fast one on me?

Monthly targets based on reg dates I would guess. Yes you signed in September, but they can mark any date within a window to suit their own needs when notifying the relevant department.

No garage does sales targets on used cars by registration date.

Hard to know what to do, I wouldn't be happy taking posession of something that could have been up to no good from the 31st August until 3rd September. Try contacting them again and visit in person, I'd seek the full months tax plus another months as compensation for the mess. If neither is forthcoming I'd get a solicitor to write them a letter seeking information as to why the car was registered in your name before you purchased it leaving you open to speeding fines, tolls and crimes which you are not liable for.

A months tax is probably €20, hardly worth getting a solicitor involved!

Ring the salesperson, get something out of them to make it up.
