According to reports, nothing has been said yet what going on? I just posted it because conspiracy sites are full of rumours about it right now. It could turn out to be nothing but hey it's an interesting news story.

SUNSPOT, NM – The Sunspot Observatory is temporarily closed due to a security issue at the facility that’s located 17 miles south of Cloudcroft in the Sacramento Mountains Friday, an Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) spokeswoman Shari Lifson said.

“The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy who manages the facility is addressing a security issue at this time,” Lifson said. “We have decided to vacate the facility at this time as a precautionary measure. It was our decision to evacuate the facility.”

She said she cannot comment on the specifics of the security issue.

The FBI is refusing to tell us what’s going on,” House said. “We’ve got people up there (at Sunspot) that requested us to standby while they evacuate it. Nobody would really elaborate on any of the circumstances as to why. The FBI were up there. What their purpose was nobody will say.”

But for the FBI to get involved that quick and be so secretive about it, there was a lot of stuff going on up there,” House said. “There was a Blackhawk helicopter, a bunch of people around antennas and work crews on towers but nobody would tell us anything.”

The Daily News contacted the Albuquerque FBI spokesman seeking comment for this story, but telephone calls and messages were never returned.

For the conspiracy-minded, Sunspot is a mere 130 miles from Roswell, New Mexico, and about 90 miles from the White Sands Missile Range. Established in 1958, the observatory predates the unincorporated area in the Sacramento Mountains that was named for it. Employees, when they were there, had to go to nearby Cloudcroft for food and gas on New Mexico State Road 6563, named for the brightest wavelength of hydrogen emission, H-alpha

There only two options I can think why this place would be closed down for 4 days now. A threat was made and FBI swarmed in or a worker has spotted something and reported it and the FBI rushed in before leaked to the press?

I would normally post this guys videos but he has a news report on it. A very strange event seems like the Sheriff of the town is not being told what going on?

6 days still no word what is happening. The sheriff said the FBI will not even tell him what's going on very strange if it was a threat to someone would the local police not be informed about it?

RT seems to be the only news on or side of the pond talking about it right now.

The first I heard of this was on RT, a little googling, and it does appear that something is happening in that area.

It'll be interesting to see if it is completely ignored in the coming weeks, or what explanation is given.. If any.

Maybe a load of weather balloons have crashed.

Apparently, residents were moved out of their homes too and the post office was closed. What very strange is the sheriff of the town is not being told a damn thing about what's happening he spoke to the local press. If this happening why is the mainstream media in the US quiet about it?

Could it be national security issue terrorism cyberhacking of satellites? Or was someone at the observatory about to leak something to the press? NSA monitors everything phone calls, emails?

And apparently, the Soho Nasa live feeds have gone offline since Sep 9th. They claim they are going to be down for seven weeks. If you check their images and video they only have images and data up till the 6th Sep. For the last 5 days, nothing that why it's strange. And FBI shut down the observatory on the 6th or 7th of Sep

Dailymail posting something but no updates, unfortunately.

Is this true or hyperbole headline?

Scientists warned earlier this week that a huge hole has opened up in the sun's corona, which could cause damage to power supplies and affect satellites.

It will also likely trigger auroras. Fast moving solar winds are created where the star’s magnetic field opens up into space, captured as vast black regions in satellite imagery.

Charged particles have now made their way out into the solar system and begun to hit the atmosphere of our planet.

The charged, magnetic particles from the solar storm can interfere with machinery in Earth's orbit as well as at the planet's surface, such as GPS systems and radio signals. They can also threaten airlines by disturbing Earth's magnetic field.

Not sure what you need black helicopters and FBI?

The media is picking it up anyway.

Something to do with two eclipses? i.e. Two circles of different sizes.

Is it ye olde planet Wormwood?
Or a good night on the way for viewing aurora borealis?

Either that, or there is a major doughnut sale underway at the Sunspot Observatory New Mex.

It'll be interesting if an "official" explanation is ever given, or if it is just covered up forgotten about.

If this was an anthrax outbreak, I'd imagine that the CDC would be involved , .. but there's nothing coming from that Gov, maybe an experimental aircraft has crashed.

A crashed experimental aircraft is my thinking..

There is reports this week of the Northern Lights erupting with 'more colour than usual' (pink/yellow as well as green) over Lapland - due to a hole in the sun's upper atmosphere.

But also suggests the geomagnetic storm (of 11 sept) is now subsiding. Curious indeed.

The best explanation I have heard so far is the Chinese were spying on US sites like White Sands. Remote possibility they infiltrated and hired someone working there to do the hacking from the inside? That would definitely bring in the FBI.

The only odd part is why close the Post Office and remove some residents from their homes near the site?

Cyber terrorism seems like the right explanation right now. It would explain the secrecy for seven days now. That's a big news story if a foreign government is using US sites to watch secret tests the Americans are carrying out at White Sands and other locations.

8 days this only update I have read.

The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), which manages the Sunspot observatory with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation, hasn't said much, either. The organization released a statement saying that AURA "is addressing a security issue" at Sunspot "and has decided to temporarily vacate the facility as a precautionary measure until further notice." AURA "is working with the proper authorities on this issue," the statement adds, without specifying who those authorities are.

And we may not get answers anytime soon. At 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) today (Sept. 14), AURA Corporate Communications Coordinator Shari Lifson sent out an email update, which stated that AURA "has decided that the observatory will remain closed until further notice due to an ongoing security concern."

An overview image of the area. Would not surprise me if its something to do with spying?

A guy took a walk around the area its a ghost town. The workers have been moved out and residents have left. I think this guy was lucky to get in and have look around. Since this, they have posted security at the gates.

It really weirds why they can't just tell people what happened over a week now. Or maybe we will never know?

    And it's open again.

Nothing too see here.. move along

But still... No details.. who was this criminal.. why wasn't the Sheriff informed., has the criminal been captured ?

According to court documents, kiddie-porn on a computer in there is the reason for the closure.
A federal search warrant reveals that Sunspot Solar Observatory was shut down as FBI agents conducted computer forensic searches for child pornography.

The source of child pornography was traced to an IP address used at the observatory and a source within the building observed a computer with "not good" images on it, the warrant states.

An investigation by the FBI revealed that a janitor is the main suspect in the search, however he has not been charged with a crime even though his name is on the warrant.

While I don't doubt that kiddie-porn was found there, I find it hard to believe that this would be the reason for shutting it down for so long. There's definitely something else at play here. The investigation may simply have turned up some kiddie-porn.

The theory about the Chinese and White Sands, posted earlier by Cheerful, seems to fit the reaction by the feds and the Chinese are already been caught infiltrating industry and academia in the USA. There's no proof of this being the case yet and we may not know for months or years.
