Nissan Qashqai - Issues to look out for

    Hi,

Brother in law is looking to buy a Qashqai, budget somewhere between 10-15k as far as I can tell. So he's looking for good late mark 1 or early mark 2.

He only does about 5-6 thousand miles a year, so I told him petrol would be probably be better, depending on what the petrol ones are like. There's just less choice when it comes to the petrol ones though.

A few questions if anyone can help with opinions . .
What's the petrol Qashqai's like in both mrk 1 and 2 ? Are they dead slow to drive / or have any other issues ?

Would he get away with diesel if he was stuck and seen a good diesel one, given he likes to give them a blast now and then would that help keep away the dpf issues ?

What are the main issues to look out for on Qashqai's mark 1 and 2's ?

Would he be better with some other crossover type, what are other alternatives in that budget.

    Thanks all.

The early versions (2007-10) have a 1.6 (117 b.h.p.) which was replaced by an updated engine with the same power output but lower emissions in 2011. The latest versions feature a 1.2 litre turbo (115 b.h.p.). All produce adequate performance. The diesels are much better in overall terms particularly the 1.6 (130 b.h.p.). It's a boring car to drive regardless. The Juke is a very good drivers car but many dislike it's design. The Qashqai is very reliable, like all Nissans. The only real issue with them is that the front suspension parts tend wear out quicker than most similar type of cars.

The 1.6 petrol is very noisy. With the mileage they’re doing I’d get one over a diesel though.

I remember reading updated 1.6 petrol in mk1 model is more sluggish than previous 1.6 engine.

I made two friend buy 2.0 petrol automatic version of mk1 and they both like them a lot. Tax is 710/750 on them though if it is an issue. I guess later mk1 models are 1.6 petrol auto though.

My brother bought 2012 1.6 petrol auto at home and he was ok with it until he moved to a city with crazy hills. lack of torque and CVT gearbox is no no for steep hills on N roads

I drove mk1 models above a lot and rented 1.6 auto mk2 for a week. New model felt more cramped in front seats to me with bigger console and thicker doors but it was better insulated noise wise.

Mk1 should have independent rear suspension vs torsion beam in mk2 if handling is important.

I prefer a late model high spec mk1 diesel manual unless he doesn't want to go for much cheaper 09-10 2.0 petrol auto.

all useful folks thanks, this evening he was also on about stretching his budget to the max and trying the new Duster base model petrol, I wonder does it have the same 1.6 petrol as the mk1 quashqai had ? I warned him they are basic, but with his miles might not be a bad idea to try a run in one either ?

I am 100% sure petrol engines in qashqai are made by Nissan. I doubt they find their way into duster. It should be the 1.6 petrol engine from megane mk2/mk3.

And I prefer any used qashqai to a brand new duster especially base model. Nissan quashqai, Hyundai ix35, Kia Sportage all have petrol versions in his budget and they are decent reliable options.

The ventilation system can give trouble on both the first and second generation Qashqai. Clutches can be weak on first generation petrol ones too. I'd go with a second generation 1.2 petrol if you can afford it.

I’ve lived with both the MK1 1.6 petrol
and the MK2 1.2 petrol and the latter is a better car and engine on every level. A much more refined car, worth looking for the newer model if he can get it within budget.

Do the early Qashqai 1.5 diesels not have a DPF. I seem to remember that the DPF only came in in late 2009. Might be wrong on that. Anyone know?.

Duster and Qashqai both use the HR16DE 1.6 Petrol. Most of the European Nissan stuff uses engines co-designed with Renault.

You made me suspicious of my memory sir :D

All the references on internet points to K4M engine code for duster petrol engines. As far as I remember that is the engine used in clios and meganes for years.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_K-Type_engine

I know dci diesel engine(K9) went into Nissan models from 2003+ but my understanding is naturally aspirated petrol engines weren't shared between them and both used their own designs.

Didn't check the new version of duster though if you are referring to that

Our mechanic said if your doing any mileage the front suspension needs regular work.

Correct. Add wheel bearings to that list too. Clutches, slave cylinders etc.
Have a Qashqai + 2 as a family wagon. While it is a fine car they are cheap and cheerful so expect reliability to suffer, interior plastics, simple things like window regulators etc.

Thanks folks, given all the in's and out's he's thinking of stretching a bit to the new model duster instead, are they available yet ?

Why would he do that? The Qashqai is a superior car which will hold it's value better.

Duster a step in the wrong direction...

New vs 4 years old I guess.

New Duster is a big step up from the previous model.

    A Duster?

I'd take a 10 year old Qashqai over a PCP Duster
