I am now unemployed about 4 months - had been working 10 years . Hope to get back to work but taking some time out until Christmas . My query is on my tax credits
In 2016 I was out sick for year on illness benefit and I have 17 tax credits - was hoping I would have more how is that calculated or is it a mistake then in 2017 went back to work and then out on maternity just got state maternity and my tax credits were 26. Just wandering how do they calculate it

What do you mean by: 17 tax credits and my tax credits were 26?

Are we talking euros, bananas or low-flying cattle here?

Did you request a P21 from Revenue for either 2016 or 2017?

Oops meant total number of weeks insurable employment it’s states on p60 - trying to figure out how I got 17 weeks when I was off work for all
Of 2016 and how I got 26 weeks when I was on maternity leave for the following year - ideally I was hoping it would be 26 weeks for 2016 but I don’t even know where 17 weeks came from - I hope I make sense cause I’m not even sure if I make sense - the reason is that for maternity in 2019 I need to have 26 weeks for 16 and 26 weeks for 17!- I’m short 9 weeks to avail of benefit

I’ve worked solid for 10 years and i don’t think I’m going to be entitled to benefit - I was going to take on some work early next year in family business for few weeks to get the benefit

Thanks. I suspect that you may be just a little confused between PAYE (tax) and PRSI (social welfare)! So, for starters, please note that tax credits have got absolutely nothing to do with eligibility for Maternity Benefit - it's your PRSI contributions that matter.

First, let's look at 2016. If you got a P60 for 2016 (even though you state that you were "off work for the whole year"!) then you must have been in insurable employment for part of the year, and according to your P60, you were in insurable employment for 17 weeks. (that's why Line 4 of Section F of your P60 says 17).

Next, look at 2017. Line 4 of Section F of your P60 states that that you have 26 weeks' of PRSI credits - which means that you would have been at work for half of the year, is that correct?

And you're hoping to get maternity benefit next year, so, as you wrote, you would need 26 weeks of paid PRSI for both 2017 and 2016, which you haven't got.

And say that you are "now unemployed for four months" - does that mean that you worked between Jan and May of this year? If so then you would have accumulated PRSI credits for up to 5 months? Then if you worked in the family business for the rest of the year - starting immediately - you might just have enough time to cobble the 39 weeks paid PRSI that would make you eligible for MB. But, if you'd prefer to take "time out" then it's a bit naive of you to expect other Social Welfare contributors to subsidise your holiday!

To sum up, Social Welfare Benefit Payments are based on the contributions that someone pays into the insurance fund. And while you state that you've "worked solid for 10 years" from the other information that you've supplied it certainly looks as though you haven't made enough paid PRSI contributions during this year or the two previous years to entitle you to any more benefit.

Thanks for your explanation of it - I suppose I’m confused as to why I got 17 weeks insurable employment when I was out sick and could I have got extra contributions to bring me to 26 weeks with pedi credited contributions when out sick - something I’ve googled but don’t understand . As for your holiday comment I won’t even reply to that comment I haven’t been out sick for no reason I’d love to have been working - but appreciate your information on my other queries. I’m going to go into to welfare office to ask them I’m credited contributions .Thank you

So when you wrote "taking some time out until Christmas" you didn't mean that you were taking a break from work, but that you are sick?

So are you receiving illness benefit?

You also refer to being unemployed for the past 4 months - did you quit your job, and if so are/were you receiving a jobseeker payment?

Either way, your statement that you Hope to get back to work but are taking some time out until Christmas" suggests that you could work but don't plan to!
