Importing your own car/motorbike from the UK - query on documentation needed

    Hi all,
I'd like to pick the brains of the knowledgeable here.

    The scenario is this.....

my sister in law owns a bike in the UK (she is the registered owner on the log book for over a year) and has brought the bike into Ireland in order to re-register it here in her name. Long story as she comes back and forth between Australia and here.

I have a VRT appointment to re-register it coming up.

She has no problem in paying the VRT, which will be around €100 (an old bike) i.e. she is not looking for an exemption even though she owns the bike for over a year.

I have most of the documentation needed, including a letter from her stating that I can act for her in reregistering it.

    Here is the question/problem.

    1. The list of documentation states that I have to have an invoice showing the purchase price, but as she owns the bike for over a year, and got it free from a friend, I don't have this receipt. Will this be a problem?

    2. The list of documentation states that I have to have proof of when it was brought into the country. I have the ferry ticket for when she rode it over, but the motorcycle Reg. part of the ticket says TBC (to be confirmed). Will this be a problem?

I have all the other documentation, passport, utility bill in her name, PPS number etc. It's the two issues above I'm concerned with.

I don't want to turn up and be told "sorry - no can do" and have to reorganise. I can't find any information specific to this scenario on the web. All I get is people who buy the vehicle and come straight back, or own it for more than 6 months and want an exemption.

By the way, it is all legit, she will be keeping the bike in Ireland and using it when she is here. It will be insured and taxed etc.

    Thanks for the help.
    Llewellen.

I would obtain a handwritten receipt with the registration and a nominal sum of purchase. This is about satisfying the tick box. For bikes its obviously based on CC not a notional value that Revenue apply to cars.

The ferry ticket is the ferry ticket, if you have that then its another box ticked as far as I am concerned.
If the bike hasn't been ridden then it won't have been logged by Revenue Agents.

    Thanks CJ,
I will obtain a receipt as you suggested. ;)

And the bike has been sitting in the garage since coming into the country, so it won't have come to their attention.

    Here's hoping.
