Sky are offering HD and box sets together as a sub which I don't want and have said there are no free HD channels at all but I know someone who is on a variety package like myself but has HD channels and don't have a HD sub on their HD box.

Yes, RTE One, RTE 2 and TG4 do not require a HD sub. BBC 1 HD and BBC 2 HD will also be available on the EPG.
