    Hi there,

Can you please tell me if someone reports me for using a pressure washer/hose pipe in my own back garden, what actions can you take?

I would have thought you would be in serious breach of Data Protection for even requesting this information.

    Hi Fr_Dougal,

Irish Water has been very encouraged by the efforts of homeowners and businesses to conserve water during the on-going drought. We have had a significant number of calls an average of 300 a week into our call centre seeking advice and support regarding the Water Conservation Order and what is covered.

Irish Water has also published water conservation advice on our website water.ie.
Of the 300 calls a week a small proportion were from members of the public reporting suspected violations of the Water Conservation Order. Irish Water has authorised personnel on the ground, calling to the homes where we have received reports. We have been focused on reminding these customers that the Water Conservation Order is in place, the impact of the drought and the need to conserve water. As yet no fines have been levied but this remains an option open to Irish Water (through An Garda Siochana) as provided for by the Water Services Act 2007.

The processing of personal data collected during the course of the hose-pipe ban for the purpose of enforcing the Water Conservation Order is (i) necessary in order for Irish Water to carry its statutory functions which are in the public interest (conserving water); and (ii) carried out by Irish Water in the exercise of its official authority; and accordingly permitted by Data Protection Legislation.

    Thanks,
    Niamh
