Happened this morning... A black cat was sitting at the side of the road & just as I was about to drive past it, it ran out!

I kept going, then pulled over & cried.

If it belonged to anyone reading this I am so so sorry!!

Did you go back and check the cat? It could have been injured and could be ok with vet treatment?

Where did this happen? Road? Area? County?

True, reversing over it, to be sure, may have been the humane thing to do.

Well leaving it there without checking wasn’t what I’d do.

I lost 3 cats on the n17 over the years, I don’t rescue cats anymore because of it, we have loads of land to the back but they just love roads

It was an accident. Nothing you could have done.

If you felt your wheels go over it, there was almost zero chance of it surviving very long in the unlikely event that it it was not killed outright immediately.

It was 100% accidental ! I should have at least stopped to check the cat though so mad at myself for being so mean :(

You really should have checked and brought it to a vet. When my cat got hit by a car, I didnt find him until hours later and he had a broken leg and hip he was so frightened and in awful shock. If who ever had hit him had gone back to check he could have been found and helped much sooner and would have prevented allot of pain caused to the cat. Hitting animals on the road happens, not much can be done about it and its not your fault but if it happens again please take the time to go and check on the animal because you never know and they can end up lying on the road in allot of pain.

Sounds like the cat was probably done if you hit it pretty solidly.

No one likes to see an animal die but sometimes these things happen.

We live along a fairly busy minor road with a cat. Thankfully she's absolutely terrified of the road and won't even spend much time in the front garden unless we're there.

Very sad. For you and the potential owner.

But this is the perils of cat ownership for most people. The reality is when a cat leaves your house it's a lottery as to whether it'll come home, between the road, dogs, wild animals and horrible people there is so much potential danger.

Cats are half wild, it's next to impossible to keep them contained, I only ever had one cat and situations like this are why I'll never have another.

Is the body still there? I think the decent thing to do would be to bring it to the vet to have it scanned for a chip, at least then the owners could be informed if there's one present.
