    Hi,
A couple of days of a clicking/grinding noise from the back of the steering wheel followed by an air bag light along with the horn and steering controls not working has me assuming the Clock Spring has gone wallop.

A few quick questions if I may.

Apparently it’s a common enough issue with these(dust a debris getting into the component)and a recall was issued in the US. Anyone know if there was a recall issued over this side of the water? Only have the car two years.

Anyone have a ballpark figure on the cost for parts and Labour?

Is this part called something else as I can’t seem to find it on Irish auto parts sites?

Hope all the above makes sense, thanks.

There are a couple of different types of airbag clock spring. Even if the chassis number is entered into the VW ETKA parts catalogue it will advise to get the part number off the old unit, e.e 5K0959... It then needs to be coded into the car, they are not plug and play

    Hope this info helps!

    Ok, thanks.
So it’s looking like a main dealer job.
Anyone have a rough idea on price?

Has to be a cheaper alternative than the dealer
Probably be mad money to get it fixed
I know the clock spring on my audi/passat makes the squeaky creaky noise when its really warm but never really got as bad as yours

did you try any of the vw forums for info?

As said above it’s not a simple fit. Some coding involved.
I’ve priced around this morning and the main dealer is not much more expensive than the Indy’s and the main dealer provide a two year warranty on the part so I’ll probably go with them.

    Good stuff
Sure go with the dealer so if there isn't much in the difference

If an independent garage supplies a genuine VW part then the part is covered by the same warranty as you get if you use a main dealer for the whole job.

What sort of quotes are you getting?

    Between 400 and 500.

I think the part is around 300+ VAT iirc so 4-500 fitted wouldn't be bad. 1.5 hours labour would be fair to replace and code.
