Could anyone give me any information on how I could transfer to a job as an electrician to a job in electronics?

I've always had an interest in the way electronics components work and are maintained etc. I've realised the electrical trade is not for me and want to somehow transfer into the electronics world.

I am willing to go back and study but don't want o undertake a 3 or 4 year course as I don't have the time or the money.

    Thanks for any help!

    Maybe:

Keep working as a sparky and study at night.
There are many opportunities for remote study and qualification.
At least that way you could afford to do it, with maybe taking a year off at the end for full time study to complete it.

There is some electronic development done in ireland, but some of it can be quite specialist. I would look at getting a good understanding of electronic hardware and software (embedded firmware), this should give you a broader appeal than just hardware. I assume you have a level 6 at the moment, so you'd be looking at a couple of years to get a level 7 part time.

I do both I'm not qualified to do either. School of youtube!

Start by fixing broken gubbins, then hack working products because everything in this world has room for improvement.

Changing jobs...well become an expert in a field and then become self-employed.
Best thing to do is earn bread and butter on the trade and follow your heart with the profits. Makes for a painless transition.

I've blown up a lottov gear (accidentally, my own stuff...I'm more diligent and conservative if I don't own it )...I've learned more this way for less expense than college book learnin'

I started with EEVBlog and buying used test gear.
These days I build better battery chargers and off grid systems than anything you can get off the shelf, but site electrical pays the bills.

What do you want to do in electronics? I’ve a B Eng in electronics and there’s not many jobs in Ireland. Lots more work in electrical engineering.
