Hi, so my nissan micrajust broke, engine is gone, not worth fixing older car. I left the car with my mechanic, as he said that they have a guy that comes once in a while and takes the cars off them. And i actually seen the guy when i was there, just a random guy that's taking the cars for scrap.

Ok so this is my first car for scrap, what should I do now? I mean i left the car to my mechanic for parts / scrappage, he said that's np, and i did not have to pay 100E for tow just to get maybe 50E at the scrappage. Should i contact Department of Transport, take the reg off the vehicle or something? i dont have any proof that this car is scrapped when i left it to mechanic for parts.
I just dont want some unexpected suprises in future.

Just get registered dismantler etc to issue you with a certificate of destruction. They should then notify registry about same.. but main issue is that you get the certificate of destruction otherwise all sorts reminders /threats about tax. Nct etc

so i should to take a tow and get the car to registered dismantler? I mean he won't give me the paperwork without the car right, so its better to not leave it there just for the parts / scrap when he's done with the car?

Why not just sign the car over to your mechanic, send of the Registration Certificate, then it's not your problem anymore.....

i'll wait until monday when the boss is at the garage, I was there an hour ago and the other mechanic said he will talk with him on monday and i should come over and see what's next, i might just give them the log book if they want it. Or ill use scrapmycar,ie it's free in the greater dublin area, well at least that's what they say on the website.

I wouldn't be too keen on trusting those guys. If your mechanic is sending it for scrap you need a cert of destruction, otherwise get him to fill in the taxbook and transfer it to his own name.

OP, there is only one proper way to scrap a car and that is it give to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) which will give you a certificate of destruction. They notify Shannon that the car has been scrapped and that's your ass covered.

The alternative is that your car could end up back on the road with a boy racer who won't bother to register it and that means you start getting demands for tolls, speeding fines or (worst case) the cops knock on your door some night to discuss a hit and run involving 'your' car.

Your local authority website should list your local ATFs.

If you bring a car to authorised scrap dealer, what kind of value would they give, if say engine etc was all in good shape?

Typically it will be based on the scrap value of the metal, which is quite low. They'll put the car onto a weighbridge in the dismantlers or have a figure from experience for common makes + models. For a Micra I'd guess you might get €40 - €45

Often the Battery and the Cat are worth slightly more than the rest of the Car.
If you can remove these and give them in separately you can double your money.....this would only apply with a Scrap Metal dealer, not with a Car Dismantler .
