    Hi all

I hope I'm in the right place. If not please re-direct me.

Is there a relatively cheap way to record HDMI output to a video file format?

Maybe some sort of device to record to USB key or something else.

    I don't want to spend a fortune.

    Thanks in advance.

    Record what from HDMI?

There are HDMI capture devices, these are mostly used for capturing your own gameplay from consoles or PCs where the output is unencrypted.

Other content such as broadcasts or pre recorded media are protected by HDCP and recording is not possible , not legally anyway.

Recording digital content to USB or hard drive usually means capturing the compressed stream from the source, not recording the unpacked live content from the HDMI output, which is absolutely huge.
