Attic insulation and flooring, how to raise the floor

We have an attic that is half partially floored with tongue and groove and the insulation is the blanket type, pretty sure it's fibreglass as it can be itchy. This was done before we bought the house.

I want to floor the remainder for more storage space and raise the flooring slightly in order to proved space for the cables that currently run across the joists and existing insulation, as well as avoiding compressing the existing insulation.

Presumably I can just buy any sort of battens and cut them to size, or is there a recommended space between the floor and the insulation below?
