    Hi all

Does anyone have a rough guideline on what it costs to buy grass from field. Example would be I would sell grass to local contractor. He would cut, bale, wrap and draw away for himself or to sell if he chooses.

Let's say for example there was 50 bales in the field. What would you charge per bale.

Thanks for reply. Grass gone to strong for grazing now so I was thinking of taking a 3rd cut off it.

Bale it up in a few weeks and stick it on done deal for €40. You'll sell it no bother. Cash before collection obviously.

15 e for standing crop is reasoable for contractor . His costs would be less as he is using his own equipment .
Hes taking the risk & would want a profit also . Either way its a valuable when its cut & wrapped & prob sell at 40 e per bale due ton the shortage .

Jeez I wouldn't have the neck to charge lads around here €40 a bale. €25 plenty

Was the same. But I had to pay up last spring and any time I need something it costs. Stick it up on done deal and off to whoever is willing to pay for it.

200 bales of haylage went up for auction last week after the local mart. They were bid to €48 each.

I'm not going to be afraid to ask for a few bob anymore feck it. If you went out to rent a few acres beside you, you would get the pole off the same lads.

If i sold bales at €25 from my own yard, I'd be loosing between €1 and €1.50 a bale.

Do you mind sharing your figures on what it costs you to get a bale into your yard

We sold bales to a neighbour in the winter/spring this year. He was badly stuck with the poor spring and had lots of cows . We had it tested at 79dmd. Gave it to him for €20 a bale as didnt like see him stuck. Still have not got paid for it. He got 60 bales. Thats what ye get for helping someone out!

    Fertlizer 5X18.6.12 =87.5/acre
Plastic =3.4( roll costing 85 euro/25 bales mixture of baling at 4 and 6 layers/bale)
    Mowing, baling and wrapping 10/bale
    Hauling and stacking 1.5-2 euro/bale.

Assuming a crop of 8/acre means a bale costs around 25/acre. Bales have gotten larger and heavier over the last five years as contractors use bigger balers and larger tractors. If you go for a heaver crop in mid late June at 10/acre you still will be at 24/bale

Silage made from now on is not the ideal stuff to buy, lower DM will be an issue. But well made late May bales if they are at at 30DM containing 240kg DM/bale are worth 36/bale valuing DM at 15c/kg. But that is delivered into yard. However nobody sell this type of stuff in general

And that’s with zero land charge, which would need to be €8 - €10 a bale assuming 20 - 25 bales a year and rental market is €200 an acre.

Question, if someone had 100 acres of land and decided instead of leasing it out they would go down the road of making silage and selling it, what would be the situation with nitrates, importing slurry and buying bag stuff?

Would it be advisable to feed hay or straw with aftergrass type silage that would be low 20's dm?

Barley or other feedstuff would probably work out cheaper and have better feed value.

I made second cut in July at 4 bales per acre and it cost €20.50 per bale on cutsward.

    Sure.
    Land charge €5
    Fert. €7
    Cut bale wrap draw €13
    Wrap. €3
    —————
    = €28.
I didn’t include slurry as I feel benefit negates expense.
I’m sure others differ but I can’t see by much.

The last I checked I don't charge myself rent for my own land. But yes you are 100% correct, grass requires CO2, not fresh air, to grow.

Cuting is 2/bale, baling and wrapping and baling is 8/bale, wrap/plastic is extra
