I enjoy making some mixed media cards, tags, etc., but I just don't understand junk journals. I can understand art journals but junk journals! A crafter online said they can be used for....'whatever'. Still didn't clarify anything for me. Some can't even be used as a diary as there is so much images, text, fluffy stuff, grungy stuff etc., etc. Just wondering if anyone here actually uses them, and how, and why? If I knew, I might just be tempted to make one! :o

I wonder, are they like scrapbooks made with recycled materials? scrap = junk; book = journal?

    Edit: Yep, looks like it.

I would look at it as a combination of a scrap-book, collage art and a collection of mood-boards. I dont know that you'd necessarily 'use' it for anything except the pastime of creating it. But of course you can put in lots of blank pages if you wanted to write in it.

Yes, indeed I seem to see their creation to be the enjoyable bit, then they show them off on Youtube, and I honestly can say these crafters 'fondle' their junk journals, embarrassingly at times! :D Doubt I'll get into that. Thanks for your replies.

    Heavens she does go on!

I have what could almost be called a junk journal, though I think it was a scrap book when it was made. A book mostly of greetings cards that my grandmother and her sisters sent to each other 'To dearest Emma from Maud', little silk patriotic things that maybe came from cigarette packets, actual 'scraps' - pictures that you could buy by the sheet for scrapbooks, colour plates from garden magazines, and all sorts of bits and pieces. It isn't particularly tidy though and overall looks a lot like those junk journals!

Some videos do go on, don't they, I tend to speed them up to get through them quicker. Actually, scrapbooks is a good description of them, and one which I understand better than the journals. I found these videos on collage art which I like and they have given me a couple of ideas, and encouraged me to give this a go some time when I clear several unfinished projects from my craft table.
