Chrome Cobalt Denture from Dental Hospital

I have a chrome cobalt denture which was fitted 25 years ago. I want to replace it with a new one as it's deteriorated over time. Does a medical card cover the cost in the Dublin Dental Hospital? If not, what would an average charge amount to?

You could contact DDH and ask, but they are expensive due to material and laboratory fees, depending on design it could be anywhere from €700-1500. A standard acrylic denture is much cheaper and may be available on your Med card, a chrome cobalt will not.

Without knowing the actual charges normally applied by regular dentists, I had imagined the figures you quoted would be everyday prices and those in the DDH considerably less. Is that not the case?

I don't think they are that much less in general, but with a Med card certain treatments are free, but not chrome cobalt dentures. Itenneb these are never going to be cheap because the production costs are so high. But the only way to find out is to ask.

As a guide I had a partial denture made recently.

The acrylic was roughly half the price of the cobalt. €700 and €1450.

There’s no way you’ll get a cobalt denture on any medical card but maybe you can pay the difference.

    Hope this helps

CHrome dentures are covered on the medical card in the dental hospital. Private fees would range from 900 - 1800 euro.
