    My cousin bought a car from a man up the north of Ireland, he didn’t receive any paper work I think it’s called a v5 certificate. The car was bought in an auction in England he knows, how does he go about registering the car in Ireland

    DIY-> Buying

    Did he try to approach the man again about the paperwork?
    Was he promised the V5?

    What documents do I need when registering a used vehicle?

    It really does beg belief why some people still don't research the proper way to buy a car including what documentation is needed with the car especially if it's a foreign registered car. If you got no registration document with the car how do you know if the car is legitimate or not, it could be stolen, two different cars welded together or a clone of another car on the road.

    Registering this car in the south is now going to be a pain in the arse without the proper registration document. You will need to contact the DVLA in Swansea to see if they can help your cousin sort this mess out. If they have a similar process to here then they will need to contact the last registered owner to confirm they sold the car before sending you a Permanent Export cert which the VRT folks will accept to register the car. However if they do this it can take weeks or longer which means that the car will be outside the initial 30 day VRT rule which will result in late VRT daily penalties.

    Hopefully for your cousin's sake a missing registration cert is the only thing wrong with the car. Chancers selling cars from the side of the road or car parks without proper paperwork will continue to do so as long as there are people out there who continue to buy them.
