Occasional trouble starting a 14 golf

Have a 14 1.6 TDI golf that's occasionally taking a few extra ticks turning over to start up. Only bought the car 6 weeks ago and it had just been serviced, has a full service history also with 68000 miles on the clock at the minute. Thought it was having trouble starting on a cold morning after being left overnight or over the weekend originally but have noticed it seems a bit more random as its started fine a couple of mornings then taken a bit longer after work when I go to drive home.

Getting a good drive 5 days a week, I commute 25-30 miles to work each way. Would replacing the battery be the first avenue here or is there something more I should worry about? Engine is under warranty for 3 months.

You only need to replace battery if engine is not turning over quickly enough to start..However if at all times the engine rotates over quickly but fails to start up then replacing battery will be a waste of money..the vw batteries are usually very good and I sold a 1.6 vw 2012 some time back and first day battery no problems...also if it's only when engine cold it could be an issue with pre.heater plugs but again car is far too new for this fault... if you have warranty just go back with list of anything wrong in one go and should all get sorted..there quite good and haven't come across many issues. Bar the dreaded egr cooler which is now a well known fault..

Have the battery tested would be my first step.
