Not a major problem / barrier but just be aware that potnetially your father's current sim card size could be different to the new phone you get.

The shop (Three / Vodafone / etc.) will sort that out for you though so no need to worry.

Good site for comparing phones is gsmarena. Has user reviews there too to see if a device is suitable / worth the price.

If its something straight forward you want as he is not very tech savvy.

A lot of Samsung and huawei phones feature a Basic setting.

Makes the phone basic.. so you can only make calls send texts etc... did it for my mam as apps etc are beyond her and she would end up spending a fortune on Data

Thanks, we have tried to school him over the last couple of years, he has finally managed to comprehend the difference between wifi & data, and has has also gotten the hang of viber/whatsapp, so not doing to badly.

Think he would like a decent enough camera, and a bit of storage as we have not managed to train him on the concept of cloud back-up yet ;)

This is probably a little "too nerdy", but you can use something like MacroDroid to automate wifi / data if you're worried about those things.

For example, you can set a rule to say "turn off data after a certain time" or even "send a text when connected to <home wifi network>". Has plenty of prebuilt rules, so you might find something useful.

A new Xiaomi mi A1 3gb ram/32gb storage can be picked up cheap now from adverts and online.

It runs stock Android and is a neat little phone. Would last him a few years more.

Something with text big enough to read is important too!

My dad had a few large androids in the past (Sony Xperia Z2 for a long time),
but switched to an iphone SE last year and finds the screen clearer even though it's smaller.

He wanted the iphone because it's compatible with his hearing aid.
He'll be 87 this month and getting calls straight into his ear is fantastic for him.
It had got to the point where he wouldn't even hear the phone in his pocket before he made the switch.
