Need a new laptop after 8 years

My 2010 MacBook Pro has finally decided to pack it in. I know I won't be popular here, but it has been great. Ran like lightening the first 6 years, started to slow down a little after that, then cpu temperature sensor went a few months ago (so fan was running on maximum all the time as a safety feature), now the fan has broken as well.

So I'm now in the market for a laptop. Don't think I can justify the prices of the current macs (I got mine originally for 1k and think that was a good spend for what I got out of it, but new ones are like 1.7k!!).

What would you recommend? Priorities for me are:

    - As long a life as as possible. Reliability is super important
    - Will be used for general office stuff, some sound editing, browsing, possibly a tiny bit of video editing once in a blue moon
    - it will be pretty much always on!
    - budget up to 1k maximum

posted this on another post. it's the highest end of the inspiron line-up. solid all-metal build.

I'd recommend the dell 7000 13 - the model with 16gb ram has the latest i7 4-core cpu chip
all the good stuff like full metal build
full hd good quality screen with slim bezels/ side borders
    16gb ddr4 ram
    i7 4-core chip
    512gb ssd
    fast charging battery tech
    backlit keyboard
    weighs only 1.4kg

    https://www.dell.com/en-ie/shop/laptops/inspiron-13-7000-laptop/spd/inspiron-13-7370-laptop

use code happy10 in the checkout to get a further 10% discount to 899 delivered (until sep 5)
can't see you getting a better laptop in this part of the world for the price tbh

Hey. Would The 2 in 1 be just as good as the standard 13 inch????

Looking to buy today before 10% sale ends.

Yes. Same except for touchscreen and maybe extra movement on hinge

the better deal seems to be on the normal 13 tho.

find touchscreen of limited enough use on a laptop myeslf - have it on my own machine and hardly ever use it.

Weirdly there are 2 options for the 13 2 in1. 1 is. 898 euro like the normal 13.

I'd go for the 13 option with the 16gb ram and 512gb ssd.
well worth the extra for future proofing, particularly on the ram side.

there is only 1 ram slot on most laptops these days.

a 1 x 16 gb ram stick is over 200 euro at the moment.

don't think that you get the same deal on the 2-in-1

the reason for 2 13 2-in-1's is that there has been a slight upgrade to that model.

no big difference except a better webcam and newere ssd tech

actually for 900 after full discount I think that you can get the 13 2-in-1 with 16gb ram but with 256gb ssd instead of 512gb ssd on the non-touch 13.

up to you on whether you think the touch screen is important (+ tent mode which is actually useful at times e.g. on airplanes for watching a movie/ tv media)

Still debating but have to get it before ale ends later.
Hard to get a good mid range laptop with good specs.

Been looking myself the last couple of days for a new university student, and I think this might be the one for me:

Admittedly its in NI, but RoI Currys probably have same deal?

Edir: in fact, here it is in RoI

Considering that one myself...only worry is the screen resolution - 1366 x 768p.
Would it be noticeable? I understand there has to be some compromises given the price.

a good screen makes a huge difference - it's what you're looking at all the time.
wouldn't go below full hd and preferably ips these days unless it was a cheap second travel laptop I was buying.
