    Hi all,

I am looking into buying two British Short Haired kittens.

I have always had dogs growing up but due to work commitments at the moment I just don't have the time to dedicate to a puppy. I think cats are a bit more independent and hopefully would cope better with being alone during the day...

I am however allergic to cats, and have been told that British Short hairs might be a good option as they are hypoallergenic and low shedders. Can anyone with experience with this breed advise here, is this actually the case? I have read varying reports online....

I would hate to adopt these two kittens and then not be able to keep them due to allergies so any advice before I make a decision would be greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks in advance!

They are neither. You can still be allergic to a claimed hypoallergenic breed because it's the dander or saliva people are mostly allergic to.
Hypoallergenic would be cornish Rex, Devon rex, laperm.
Tbh both of us in my house are allergic to cats, one severe asthmatic. We lived on antihistamines for yrs. And any time a new cat is introduced we go back to them. You eventually become immune. I am OK now with most cats, including visiting cat shows and friends house.

My brother was allergic to most animals, including our cat, but he became immune over time, even if he forgot his antihistamine he just had a sniffle, it was only when he moved out of home he'd get ichy eyes and very sniffy when he came home, but he loved the cat and she slept on his pillow.
We also had rabbits, gerbils, Guinea pigs, rats, and a dog growing up, he was allergic to all but the dog, but loved all the animals.

Try a rabbit or two? They are somewhat similar in nature to cats.

I've had a BSH for 7 years, my mate is severely allergic to it. I suppose the only way you'll know is spending some time with some BSH's.
