The Inca Trail needs to be booked in advance. Also, if you have a head for heights, you might want to see about getting a pass for Huanya Picchu. Plenty of companies online organising this.

You start in Cusco for the trek and finish in Agua Calientes. The trail itself is okay. If you want to say you done it go for it. Alternatively, there is the Lares Trek which is a bit more isolated as it is not as popular. It is usually frequented by those who miss out on an Inca Trail permit. However, as long as you get to the Sun Gate for dawn on your day at MP itself then it doesn't really matter.

You want to be there for dawn as MP is usually shrouded in mist and then as the sun rises the mist lifts and these is MP itself. The gradual appearance of MP is one of the most awe-inspiring sights I've seen on my travels.

Are you looking to travel within Peru or elsewhere?

Main options are to start in Lima and do a loop within Peru (I done this on my first trip). Or start in Lima, go down to Nazca, across to Cusco, Inca Trail. Back to Cusco to pick up your main luggage and onto Lake Titicaca, overnight with family on one of the islands, onwards to Bolivia and La Paz. Death Road is just outside La Paz. Might be time to go elsewhere in Bolivia and finish up in Sucre for flight back.

In my second trip I went from Santiago de Chile northwards into the Atacama, over to the Salar de Uyani, Potosi, a few other places and then into La Paz, across lake Titicaca, into Cusco for a few days in Lima before returning.
