Getting Digital images from 35mm B&W Negatives?

Have some B&W negatives- would love to get physical prints from these.
Have done an initial search of forum but turned up thread from 2010- any good recommendations now for how to do this or providers?

    Thanks in advance.

Apologies if there's an obvious thread I've missed.

    Plenty.

Most photo labs should be able to print from 35mm black & white negatives without any difficulty, and/or digitize them.

If you have lots, just buy something like an Epson V500 neg scanner and do it yourself. You'll save loads of money, have higher res digital copies, only print what you want or need to and have the asset of the scanner to keep or sell on.

Anywhere you know I could rent one for a few weeks? Maybe Conns cameras? Looks like the epsom is close to 200 euro. Would you know of cheaper ones that do a good job also?

Edit. Scratch that query. I can see after some online searching myself that you’ve given me pretty much the best basic scanner to buy and nothing under this price range is worth spending money on.

Thanks- I’ll see just how many negatives I have and wheather I think it’s worth doing as a project.

I use the V500 for all my neg scans. after 20-30 rolls of scanned film its paid for itself more or less compared to paying a shop to do it.

I have av500 myself, and use Silverfast software from Lasersoft Imaging or the Epson software, and do 48-bit scans to 16-bit/channel .TIF or .PSD files.
The time investment can be great, even using batch modes.

There’s. V550 now available - any idea what the difference is to the 500? There’s also a 600 but I don’t see the value there over the 550 myself considering the additional expense.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-Perfection-V550-Photo-Scanner/dp/B00ECBRW5E/ref=sr_1_11?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1535899196&sr=1-11&keywords=negative+scanner

And sorry, one more question. Would the v550 do 110 ? I’ll probably find some of these negatives when I root in the family archive?

    I've scanned 110, 126, 127, and disc negatives with my v500.
Get creative with holding the negatives flat, or buy third-party carriers to do so.
There are nice no moire pattern glad ones.

Are you serious? Kodak Disc? I had one of those back in the day :o:p

Think I might have about 3 rounds max though- still have it and the case- can’t find the USB port though :D:D

The little I’ve done on research of these devices- it’s all about how flat you can get the negatives? Otherwise, blur and all sorts of things.

Will probably “invest” in the v550 over the coming weeks. I’ll report back in time.
Many thanks again for your input, much appreciated. :)

It is better to get them flat. I haven't seen any horrendous issues with negatives being curled.

The cheaper standalone viewer things that save to disc rather than computer seem to suffer from this. That’s why I’m not going that route.

I did buy a 110 negative carrier a few years back. It's specifically for the V500. I think it was about AU$80 but tbh, you can make youself one out of cardboard easily.

When scanning there are a few tricks for getting the exposure correct (for slide especially) that I've found.

When scanning medium format slide, you can use the selct window for the area you want to expose for and it will auto expose for it. Then switch the exposure to manual, resize your selection window and the exposure setting for the image remains the same, it doesn't try to auto adjust for the whole image. It will struggle with slide, thats the only thing I will say.

I also bought a 110 SLR a few years ago and only got through about 1 roll before my next old camera took up my interest. I was shooting with failing batteries for the light meter in the 110 camera so the exposures were way under exposed. Fresh batteries sorted it out. Here's a few examples from the V500.

Medium Format, probably Porta 120 or Portra 400?
