varifocals advice needed

ok. just got a pair of varifocals from specsavers and i just cant take to them at all.
a bit of background to this..
i am 48. i work in a mails centre where i sort a lot of mail, i read letter addresses in my hand perfectly, but if i look up every now and then to one of the boards we have for reference, maybe 12 feet away, i struggle to focus.
my 14 yr old son can read text on a tv screen 3 times further away than i can at my best.
when i was around 36 i went to a local optician (now gone) who suggested i try varifocals, i did, couldnt take to them, and just gave up wearing glasses.
past couple of years my eyes have gotten worse....but only viewing things far away...reading up close i am fine.

anyway...went for a new eye test with specsavers and ended up with these varifocals, i did explain how i couldnt take to them before, but between us we guessed that a fuller lens may suit better...it doesnt, awful things to look through ...like a pinhole of clear vision with a dizzy swirling effect around that, even though these are ones with widest range of vision.

i will, as agreed with them, wear them as long as i can to try and get used to them....but after a few hours i feel half blind with them, dizzy and a headache.
these of course are maybe symptoms everyone goes through trying to adjust to these...i dunno..i just really dont like them..yet anyway.

now...point of this post...a question i will ask them later, but will ask here first...as its too soon to be asking them yet.
as my close up reading is fine without glasses (although it improves somewhat with these varifocals if i look at the sweet spot...which i think is reason they suggested these as reading could be improved too)....is there such a thing as a varifocal / transition lens where the top of the lens inproves my long / length vision, but the bottom half of the lens is clear glass....thus allowing me to only have one pair on all the time, improving my far away vision, my reading remains fine for me, and there'll be no issues with fuzziness / swirling / sweet spots etc like with these.

i've explained that badly...i hope someone understands what i'm trying to say.

and thanks in advance for any replies.

You can't get a varifocal without the distortion towards the edges unfortunately. It's the change in power of the lens as you go down to the reading area that causes the distortion. A good quality varifocal (i.e. the top of the range ones) will minimise this distortion but it won't disappear completly.
