Trust this computer?

I have had an iMac, 2 iPads and an iPhone on "my devices" list for over 2 years.
At least twice a month I make sure the phone and iPads have been backed up to iCloud and the iMac.
I have got used to occasionally being asked if I trust the computer, and being told a new computer is using my appleid when I do an iTunes back up, but today I was informed that my iPhone had never been backed up to iCloud.
I actually have the correct number of 7 devices showing when I go to Settings on the devices, but today iCloud was only showing 3 of them. How does iCloud lose a device when the device thinks it is listed?
I think I must be doing something wrong???
