    Hi Guys,

Myself and my partner will be going to the Amalfi Coast in two weeks time and are looking for any recommendations or must see and do's in and around the Amalfi/ Sorrento/ Capri area.

We have hired a car so can go pretty much anywhere.

Is there anything to see in Pompeii other than Vesuvius?

Many thanks in advance for any responses :)

Forget the car, the roads are very narrow and twisty and you're hanging over the edge of a precipice on a lot of them plus the Italians are lunatic drivers. Public transport is cheap and reliable. Train to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius and Naples (Vesuvius and Pompeii are two separate sites) from Sorrento, public bus service up and down the Amalfi coast to all the beautiful towns, boat also an option. Boat to Capri.

    Enjoy.

Just back from that neck of the woods. We were based in Sorrento. I found Pompei was very interesting, but a guide is vital. You'll miss so much without a guide.
Also if you're feeling energetic look up path of the gods. A 7km hike with absolutely incredible views. Couldn't recommend it more.
And yes I agree with poster above, Italians have no understanding of the rules of the road.

If you go to Capri visit Villa San Michele

We got married in Amalfi 5 years ago. It’s beautiful. We went over twice. We visited Positano and sorrento as well. I wouldn’t be that bothered with Sorrento. As said before don’t bother with the car. We got one for the first time and it was like being in a rally. Take boats and buses to places you’ve never heard of. It’s class.

    Hi,
Will be overnight in Sorrento end of the month.
Question is How often ( approx ) is the train to Naples ?
How long is the journey ?
    Is it worth it ?

    Thanks for any assistance...

    Jay.

    Positano is a must.
The town Amalfi is the least beautiful town in that whole area so skip it.
We were there last year and rented a self drive boat for the day from Positano and that was the highlight of the trip for everyone.
Pompeii is another must (are you flying in and out of Naples as consider doing it one way to or from airport)
Driving is not for the light-hearted and expect to loose a side mirror at some point so excess insurance is a must!

The Circumvesuviana train goes about every half hour and costs about €4 euro. It can be packed and standing room only a lot of the time, especially from Naples back. It takes about an hour. If you only have one day I'd give Naples a miss and take a trip down the Amalfi coast to Positano instead as already suggested. The local Sita bus from the station will take you there, although again it can be standing room only. Buy the return bus ticket in the newsagents next to the station.
Or take the ferry to Capri and take the funicular to Anacapri and the chairlift to the top. The view is breathtaking.
Wish I was going back, it's stunning.
