Car up to 600, low tax

Hi, so my micra 05 just broke an hour ago on my way to work. Left it at mechanic beside my work, but they said its probably timing belt. My tax expires tomorrow, and nct in 25 days, and now the timing belt. So i'd prefer to buy something else, the micra has few bumps scratches, passanger side doors are hit, front bumper too, so i dont want to spend money on it, because there's no point i think. thats what the mechanic said too.

I'm really not good with cars that's why im posting here, can anyone recommend me a car with up to 1.4l ( lower prefered ) that i could look for up to 600e ( the cheaper the better ) , i can't afford a new one and i think even if i buy a car from 2012+ you never know, so i'd prefer to pay less even if its going to break soon, and i need car asap to get to work ( 20km each way).

    As in Six Hundred Euro?

yeah more or less, it can be an old car before 2000, doesnt matter to me, i'd use it to work and back nothing else really.

€600 quid or cheaper? Buy a bus pass because anything you buy in that price range will be a death box.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 509 ✭✭✭Nuw

That could do you if you somewhat manage to get it insured. And that will be the main thing these days, you won't be able to get insurance on a cheap car as all of them will be deemed "too old" by most insurance companies.

Aside from that, you might just buy someone else's problem in that price range. How much would your mechanic take to put the car right? Is the rest of the car solid? Reasoning is better the devil you know, if 600 euros can make your Micra go until you manage to put an actual budget together, it's probably a better bet than spending that money on something that may breakdown 2 hours after getting it and require an even more expensive fix..

    Tbh thats not really factual.

My friend picked up a perfectly running Mini One 2006 for 300 euro.

It quite literally only had a problem with a passenger window regulator.

There is plenty of people looking to get rid of cars. You just have to look.

He bought it as a project (to learn some mechanical skills on) but there is nothing wrong with it. So he uses it as a run around in conjunction with his motorbike.

Each to their own but I wouldn't risk it.

Why not? Would you buy any second hand car then, as all could have problems? There's lots of value to be had in cars over 10 years old due to some insurers no longer covering them. Bonus points for large engine petrol cars too. There's nothing to say a car will be dangerous, so long as you check it out first I see nothing wrong. Hell my car probably isn't even worth 600 quid at this point. Still a good, safe driver with NCT.

OP, you're going to have to open your mind to lots of cars as there will be a lot of variation in quality at this price point. Don't avoid 1.6/1.8 litre engines just because of tax, as there is likely good value to be had here.

    Because you dont know cars,

And that is fine. It could be a risk for some.

but your comment about death trap is quite literally false.

A 2006 Mini One has more safety features in it then many brand new cars in a show room. But thats off topic.

Feb 2016 i sold my wifes 2002 megane hatchback for €750 to a local guy, its still going around and has passed the 2 nct tests since with little more than expected maintenance.

I had a guy in last week looking at a brand new van, he was driving a 2002 ford courier he bought 3 years ago for €400 when he said he was broke. Van served him well and he is now in a position to change to a new one.

Cheap does not always mean bad and there would be plenty of choice in that price range for a savvy buyer.

I sold a 96 Astra for that money a few years ago. Only 80k on the clock with a full service history.

2006 Mazda 3, might be bit of a gamble with the short NCT though:

    2001 1.4 fabia
    Test till 4/19
    Tax till 6/19
Asking €575 and it's a dealer selling it.

I bought a 99 Avensis in June for 500 euro that has an NCT until June next year. The 3 mechanics in the indy garage I use all have cars in years from 1999 to 2001, all in perfect condition I'm told, all Japanese.
A man in a tyre place I was tyre shoping in showed me his 2000 Accord he bought 2 years ago, in perfect condition, built like a tank.
Plenty of good value in older cars because people are having to sell because they can't get insurance.
But for those of us who can its a buyers market.

Facebook Marketplace, absolutely loads of sub 1k cars on there, anything under 600 is usually without tax or nct though. Sold my own 407 there, for 700E. Zero wrong with it, still in tax and recently NCT'd.

123.ie/RSA seem to insure oldish cars. No bother with my 2001 car this year. There's others out there who will quote too. You just need to search around a bit.

I think if you already have a policy and just transfer it over to the car then it's not such an issue. Whereas if you went out tomorrow and bought an old car and try and take out a new policy on it then you start running into walls.

I was with 123 but they were expensive for my then 2001 car.
Switched to Bank of Ireland , insured for the last 3 years.

the focus is usually a reliable car, i had one myself for 4 years, best car i have owned. it was a 2002 1.6 petrol

make sure you find out if and when the timing belt was changed on any new car you buy.

Fella I used to know a while ago told me he used his "business insurance", whatever that meant. He had a number of older, big engined cars (e.g. 1990s 911, an Alfa GTV 3.0L V6 and so on) and he owned a garage. I have no idea about the details, however...

That meant he had a garage policy, for his business.

    OP,

It is possible to find something old and relatively reliable if you are patient and do know what you are doing. But that means being able to assess the cars on the spot mechanically during private sale.

If you can't do it yourself, find someone who can if you are going down that route otherwise it is a gamble at that price bracket.
