    From the NCTS website:
There is no advantage in delaying your NCT
Based on your test due date, NCTS can issue your certificate up to 90 days early

Vehicle owners who wish to present their vehicle for inspection earlier than 90 days before their NCT due date will now be allowed to do so.

Where this happens the vehicle will receive a 2 year (or 1 year for 10 year old and older vehicles) certificate duration from the date it passes the test.

My NCT on my 13 year old car is up at the start of January. Christmas and the New Year is always an expensive time and my motor tax is due in October so I was hoping to get both of them done in one go and not have to worry at Christmas.

They say there's no disadvantage in doing this but they also say that the cert will be issued from the date of the test. Wouldn't that mean that next year's NCT would be due in October? Which effectively means I'm losing three months of NCT I paid for last year? How is this not a disadvantage? To get maximum bang for your buck it seems you have to get the car tested the last day the cert is valid.

    Or am I missing something?

Edit: Just had a look at some of the older threads. Is it true that if I book it for the 6th October (90 days before) then the next NCT would be due in January 2020?

Only if it's before 90 days will it start on the day of the test.
So anytime within 90 days and it goes by the date on the cert.

So if I book it now for a day within the 90 day time period, it'll be valid until January 2020? The due date is the 4th January so if I booked it for say, the 7th October I would be fine?

Yeah that's how it works. Had the same with my 11 year old car this year, didn't want to do it in the month of October which is the expiry month on the disc but done it in July and got 15 months. That's the best bang for buck NCT wise.

    Brilliant. Thanks for that.
