Bringing a car from New Zealand

Hi I took a 1989 car home from New Zealand last Jan. I have it in garage never got around to doing anything about VRT it. I am not driving it as bought one here when I came back. I was driving it for four years over there. Just want to keep it as keepsake. How do I go about getting Irish plates and do I have to pay VRT and if so does anyone have a idea of how much?

I could be wrong but I think you might have missed the opportunity to get a VRT exemption since you are now here 8 months and didn't apply for it when you arrived back. You might also get stung for VAT and import duty since it's coming from outside the EU.

However as the car is nearly 30 years old it might be having a read of this thread:

Thanks for that. Didn’t know I should have applied when I came back. I paid vat and import duty at the dock. Where do I look about the VRT?

You can try and get a ballpark figure from here but I have a feeling your car is not going to be in the system:

As I said have a read of the thread I earlier linked to and maybe ask in that thread or the classic car forum about what you can do. Your car is nearly 30 years old so there might be options that present themselves around VRT that those lads might know of.

Surely it's something interesting if you went through the trouble of bringing it back with you, can I ask what car is it, just curious?

Is there a VAT issue too? Non EU import.
