Tax issue after importing

Imported my RX8 from the UK last year, it was down on the V5C as 2500CC.

After importing it to Ireland it's now taxed as 2.5L, recently found out that all other RX8s in Ireland are taxed as 1.7L so a fair difference in the price of the tax.

Have been on to the tax office who said they can't help and to call the Revenue. Have called Revenue and they said they can't help either and to contact the NCT center who did the VRT check. They said they can only go on the details from the V5C.

Have tried to change the CC of the engine in the car by the filling out the Change of particulars forum (RF111) but the main Mazda dealer here in Galway will stamp it but the tax office refuses it accept it without a letter from the dealer stating the engine has been changed, Mazda dealer refuses to write such a letter.

Any idea how I can I can pay the same rate of tax as the rest of the 8's in Ireland?

Should be able to get it taxed as a 1.3 if you're going that route, although I can't help more than that

Have failed to go that route trying to tax it as a 1.7, as the main Mazda dealer here in Galway won't give me the letter to confirm the engine cc change that the tax office are looking for.

    Thanks though.

If the V5C says its a 2500CC. , I presume that it is a 2.5 engine in it? Or was it a mistake on the V5C? If its a mistake on the V5, then it should be possible to get a corrected V%, but if it's a 2.5 engine in it, hard to see how it can be changed for tax purposes, except to replace it for a 1.7 engine. IMO.

It's technically a 1.3-litre in the RX-8, but due to how incompatible our tax systems are with rotary engines, Revenue classify it as a 1.7-litre.

I'm not sure the full ins and outs but every rx8 I've seen online says 1.7L engine

It's how rotory engines are classified for tax purposes to compare to ordinary 4 stroke engines.

Afaik, the UK just doubles the cc, our Revenue multiply it x1.5, but technically it's still just a 1.3litre

Have you heard of anyone ever successfully registering one as a 1.3L?

I remember hearing that a lot did, but afair revenue clamped down and insisted all were to be taxed as 1.7's, this was a few years ago

    Edit,

Found this thread, but haven't read it

I think you're asking Mazda for the wrong thing - what you need is not a letter saying the engine has changed but a letter stating that the engine is a rotary with a 1.3l capacity. You then need to go back to Revenue/NCT and hit them up with Section 27(b) of SI 385 of 1992 and make clear the vehicle has been registered wrongly under that provision. It's their mistake to correct, not the MTO's

    ^^^This^^^

Surely a letter of conformity from Mazda along with an engineers report stating that the engine had NOT been changed and is as it left the factory should be enough...If that fails, I would simply refuse to tax it and if caught would present everything to the judge showing how you tried to tax it but none of the authorities would entertain your evidence despite them being office monkeys and the letters from those who are an authority on these matters...and hope that the judge see's your side and dismisses the charge.
