Area Analysis

Let's say you are unfamiliar with the various areas in Dublin and you could not physically visit the areas.

You are asked to rank these 4 areas in terms of the wealth of their residents and even better try to come up with an average income figure or where they lie on an 'average income' line.

How do you do it?

Dun Laoghaire
Crumlin
Howth
Finglas

(the census does not collect personal income information).

You wouldn't be able to get that granular.

You'd have to use something indirect, like establish a ratio of income to house prices and use house prices for the areas.

Even then, there is no definition of any Dublin areas, unlike say postcodes.

Experience. The Pobal viewer seems to confirm this, at least in terms of deprivation. You could possibly swap Howth and Dún Laoghaire.

Why is Glasnevin more expensive per square foot than Finglas when they are beside eachother?

It's a tricky one to try to classify an area in this regard.

I wonder what social welfare figures would be available for each individual office and how they could be used based on the population of the area it serves as one method to get an understanding of an area.

The aim is to come up with a methodology, it's not a multiple choice question to get 2 points in the exam:)

The census does have socio-economic information that would be relevant. Age profile, household composition, employment vs unemployment, house quality, internet access, education levels.

You could use those as proxies to estimate how they rank vs an average.

I'm going to get stuck into that this weekend. There is a lot of useful information there that would allow a good educated guess.

The Central Bank Limit is 3.5, as good as any. You can get the house prices from public information or property price register.

There is no definition anywhere of Finglas, visiting it won't help and it's not written down anywhere.

To be honest, it's a pretty stupid question!
The POBAL information is by far the best available and it can't answer it ergo it's unanswerable.

There's no way of being scientific. But if I were plonked in a brand new city in another country and was looking for a place to live the first thing I would do is look at where the coast is (if it's coastal). Coastal areas are always more affluent as a general rule and you can exclude the outliers by looking at property values and crime figures.

You're looking for income data which is extremely specific and personally I'd be quite annoyed if my income was publicly available as a tool to decide which areas are better than others.

That's not my intended use at all. I know Dublin very well. It's for a marketing strategy so money is not wasted targeting the wrong demographic and as an educational study I can adapt to other areas in Ireland and the UK.

No individual is ever identified in these things, just averages at best. There is no database in the world available to the public that says Johnny Murphy who works as a cashier in Tesco and lives at 11 Seaview, Howth earned €X in 2017.
